Our Process
Step 1: Free ADU Consultation & Property Review
Before anything else, we schedule a free on-site consultation to walk your property, talk through your goals, and explain what types of ADUs are possible in your town.
Before we arrive, our team also completes preliminary zoning and property research so we can give you accurate guidance on setbacks, septic considerations, and permitting in your specific Massachusetts community.
This step helps homeowners understand:
What type of ADU your lot can support
Whether detached, attached, or garage conversion options make sense
What the permitting path looks like in your town
Step 2: Survey + Architecture & ADU Design
Every ADU project in Massachusetts begins with a site survey, and this step is required no matter what type of ADU you build. We’ll connect you with a trusted local surveyor who will map out your property, setbacks, utilities, and any zoning constraints.
Once the survey is complete, we connect you with an architect to design your ADU layout. Together, we review your goals, preferred model, and any custom features you want. Your architect will create the floor plan and exterior design needed for permitting.
This step gives you:
A full property survey
Code-compliant ADU layout options
A complete plan set ready for the permit application
Step 3: Contract, Permits & Construction
When your survey and architectural plans are finalized, we’ll review your full project scope and move into contract signing if you choose to move forward with Mass ADU.
From there:
Our team handles all permitting with your city or town
We coordinate with building officials and boards if needed
Once approved, we schedule your project and begin construction
You’ll get clear communication, predictable timelines, and a smooth building process from start to finish.
